3-D Collection

The Woodhorn 3-D collection is an amalgamation of the objects of the former Woodhorn Colliery Museum and the small collection of objects that were held by Northumberland County Archives Service, now Northumberland Archives. Our 3-D Collections Acquisition & Disposal Policy sets out our areas of collecting - material relating to the Northumberland area with particular emphasis given to the coalmining and social history of Northumberland. The focus of the collection can be primarily divided into the following catergories.

Northumberland Mining Accidents and Disasters - including objects and material associated with the Hartley Disaster and the Woodhorn Explosion.

Miners' Strikes - 1844 - 1985, badges, banners, printed material.

Memorial Glasses - of persons or events associated with Northumberland.

Art - Ashington Group works, Northumbrian mining artists, and local historical paintings and sculptures.

Textiles - Northumberland National Union of Mineworkers banners, strike and protest banners and samplers.

Mining Implements - from the Northumberland Coalfield.

We assess each potential donation to ensure it complies with the above policy. In some cases objects offered to us may not be appropriate to our collection but may be of interest to our Education Team who use them in their work with schools. In other instances when objects fall outside the remit of our policy, we may suggest that they are offered to other museums or organisations.
