Access to Northumberland's History

Our most recently completed major project is 'Access To Northumberland's History' - a Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) funded project to extend the content of our electronic catalogue and deliver interpretative, educational and outreach programmes developed from archive content. We were awarded a grant of £268,000 that allowed us to employ 5 additional staff for 2 years to add textual descriptions and digital images to the catalogue and deliver the educational / outreach programme. The project also offered volunteers the opportunity to assist with our cataloguing programme. Project outcomes included

  • more than 60.000 new records added to our electronic catalogue
  • more than 12,000 images digitised, many of which have been appended to our electronic catalogue
  • more than 500 oral histories digitised with soundbites added to our electronic catalogue
  • more than 100 new oral history recordings made, summaries prepared and soundbites added to our electronic catalogue
  • 52 new collections deposited as a result of the project
  • six small scale exhibitions researched, designed and displayed at Woodhorn
  • a major exhibition 'Northumberland At War' researched designed and displayed at Woodhorn
  • hosting 2 symposia that showcased the work of the project
  • working with a number of schools on archive based projects
  • attendance at county shows and other external events to promote the work of our service
  • the opportunity for 22 volunteers to make a huge contribution to our cataloguing programme
