Woodhorn featured in new guide to UK’s top accessible attractions

Woodhorn is one of just twenty five UK tourist attractions chosen by Silver Travel Advisor, the travel review and advice site for the over 50s, to be featured in the latest in its series of mini guides, an eight page review of some of the UK’s top tourist attractions for older and less mobile visitors.

The guide, which is available free of charge by post or in an electronic version, highlights twenty five of the UK’s most accessible days out, ranging from gardens to railways, country houses to museums, with full details of their suitability for older visitors and their carers. It features attractions across the UK and represents Silver Travel Advisor’s pick of the most suitable venues for older, less mobile or visually impaired visitors.

Silver Travel Advisor’s MD Debbie Marshall said, “Each site featured in the guide has been visited first hand by Silver Travel Advisor members, who understand the needs of the older visitor as they are themselves in their sixties and seventies.

“Our writers researched ramps, lifts, disabled toilets, wheelchair and scooter hire, parking, facilities for the visually impaired, rest seats, hearing loops and café facilities to come up with an informed and useful guide that will be invaluable for older people planning days out.

“As one of just a handful of tourist attractions to be included in this first edition of the guide Woodhorn has done exceptionally well to be mentioned and is also featured in a full review of the UK’s top accessible attractions to be found online at

Keith Merrin, Director of Woodhorn is delighted that the museum has been selected for inclusion in this guide. “Efforts have been made to ensure Woodhorn is as welcoming and accessible as possible, and with the exception of just a couple of places in our original listed colliery buildings where we can’t make any modifications, visitors can experience the whole museum.

“There are subtitles and printed versions of sound tracks, and a tactile plan of the main building, but full details of the buildings and services are available on the Woodhorn website:
