Brick Planet

14th February - 22nd March & 1st April - 31st May 2015

Woodhorn got even more awesome!

This exhibition enabled visitors to explore the incredible Brick Planet exhibition and marvel at miniature wonders from around the world recreated in LEGO® bricks. Visitors were inspired by amazing models created by LEGO brick artist Warren Elsmore and could even have a go themselves in our hands-on creation station! They could see amazing scale models of architectural landmarks from around the globe including Egypt’s pyramids, the Great Wall of China and the iconic St Pancras Station. Including the natural world in miniature from the African savannah to Niagara Falls could be seen too. Woodhorn Museum took pride in the North East’s own historic landmarks including the Tyne Bridge, Angel of the North and Bamburgh Castle, which were all specially commissioned for the exhibition and had never been seen before!

Edinburgh based artist Warren Elsmore has been a lifelong fan of LEGO. In love with the coloured blocks from the age of 4, his passion was reignited twenty years later. Subsequently he swapped his successful career in IT for the dream opportunity to work with LEGO bricks full time. As an artist and author, he creates unique, one-off models for individuals and corporate companies including LEGO, DELL, BBC, WPP and Visit Denmark amongst others.

“My first book,” explains Warren, “Brick City, was launched in 2013. It contains some of the best architectural models I've produced over the last few years plus many new models, many with full instructions! The follow-up, Brick Wonders, launched in 2014, showcases the seven wonders of the world and their modern equivalents.”

The exhibition featured many of the brilliant exhibits from both of these publications and Woodhorn's (former) Director Keith Merrin explained that the heritage of the North East is also being celebrated in Brick Planet.

“Some of our region’s own famous sites are being included in the exhibition too. The artist has been specially commissioned to create brand new models of the Angel of the North, the Tyne Bridge and even Woodhorn itself. Bamburgh Castle will also feature having been selected by the general public though an online vote. I am sure that everyone who visits Brick Planet will enjoy all of the exhibits but will take additional pleasure and pride in looking at these unique brick recreations.”
