Manuscripts

Manuscript records are those that have been created by hand, without the use of any printing process.  They are often unique; can be on paper or parchment; bound, in bundles or on their own; and be virtually any size.  They cross the centuries and bring alive the history of Northumberland.  From wills to surveys, diaries to deeds, court orders to recipes, you’ll find all of these and much more within Northumberland's archives.

The image of Wark Castle and town below is taken from a sixteenth century survey which was produced for Sir Thomas Grey of Heaton and Chillingham. The volume contains detailed descriptions of castles, tenants, rental values and other information for the manors of Wark and Wooler as well as a number of other towns across north Northumberland.

Textual descriptions of many of our archival collections and images of some of them can be found in our electronic catalogue.
