Northumberland Communities

In June 2001 Northumberland Archives Service was awarded a grant of £47,100 from The New Opportunities Fund (NOF) to digitise a range of sources relating to the history of 76 Northumberland communities.

Our project focussed on the history of 76 Northumberland communities – small ports, market towns, villages, larger towns and villages that have developed as a result of mining industries and one New Town. Original source material was selected and digitised for each of these communities. This material included maps, plans, estate, court, church and school records, photographs and oral history recordings. All of this content is viewable on http://communities.northumberland.gov.uk. Northumberland Communities was awarded The Phillimore Prize for best archival website in 2003.

Our project formed part of a regional consortium “Sense of Place North East” (SOPNE). This group brought together a number of projects relating to the rich history of the North East of England.
