Paintings Sought for Exhibition
Do you have a painting by one of the Ashington Group? This could be your chance to show off your Pitmen Painters’ work of art.
Over the years, countless people have enjoyed seeing paintings by the Ashington Group of artists, but the majority of paintings viewed have come from the main collection of work now housed at Woodhorn Museum. The search is now on for other artworks by members of this famous group of Pitmen Painters for a future exhibition at Woodhorn as part of an exciting project by North East artist, Narbi Price.
Narbi is currently working on his PhD with Newcastle University in partnership with Woodhorn. He is investigating the materials and process the artists used and how they actually painted. Inspired by his research he will then be creating his own work using the same techniques. The new paintings will be displayed in an exhibition at Woodhorn in summer 2018.
Alongside this exhibition of his new work, Narbi would like to host a show of Ashington Group artists’ paintings belonging to private individuals and other collections."It struck me whilst researching the exhibition history of the Ashington Group for my PhD, that overwhelmingly the works exhibited since at least the early 1970s have been from the Permanent Collection, housed at Woodhorn,” said Narbi. “There are many more pieces in private collections both locally, nationally and internationally.
“This is a wonderful opportunity to have a new exhibition of Ashington Group work showing at Woodhorn alongside my new paintings responding to their work, hopefully bringing back to Ashington works that haven’t been shown for over a generation or if indeed, ever.
“The exhibition would broaden and complement the familiar collection and story of the Ashington Group, and be a bridge to the new works and research of my own.
"Anyone with paintings by one of the Pitmen Painters is welcome to submit it for consideration for the exhibition. Initially a photograph of it with a description including artist, size and subject matter would be appreciated. Narbi would also be interested to hear how the painting came into your possession; perhaps it was a purchase, an inheritance or maybe it was found. Please email email@example.com with any information.
