The Mindfuls Art Gala

A day of art, fun and interactivity developed and led by Woodhorn Museum’s first young people’s art group, The Mindfuls, will take place at Woodhorn on Monday 30th March. During The Art Gala, the group will host an exciting range of family friendly activities especially developed to encourage young visitors to think about and explore art at the museum.

Visitors coming along on the 30th will be the very first to have the opportunity to use the brand new ‘Thought Kit’. This is a fun and nifty little guide to help young people discover, explore and doodle their way through the museum engaging with the art on offer. The day will also include free drop-in print making workshops for all ages, a showcase of The Mindfuls’ short animated film ‘RELEASED IN THE MORNING LIGHT’ and a make-your-own poetry installation. Activities will run from 11am - 3pm.

This family day is the culmination of work during the last six months when The Mindfuls - nine local young people aged between 17 - 22 years, have taken part in an immersive arts programme at Woodhorn Museum as part of Tate and National Galleries of Scotland’s prestigious ARTIST ROOMS programme. The group has been on a unique creative journey to learn about contemporary art and find out how it can influence and inspire them as promising young artists.

Danielle Burn, Woodhorn Museum’s Community Participation Coordinator says, “We wanted to create a stimulating program to help find new and interesting ways for the group to relate to contemporary art. Workshops from professional local artists and a bespoke opportunity to visit London have enabled the group to be able to explore themselves as young artists, and to understand and be excited by what art is happening right on their doorstep and beyond. Hopefully the group has found this experience really inspiring. The Art Gala on the 30th March demonstrates the hard work and imagination the group has injected into the project – the members are so committed, talented and enthusiastic.”

Art Gala day is also one of the final opportunities to see the ARTIST ROOMS exhibition ‘Cycle of Wall Texts’ by New York artist Lawrence Weiner at Woodhorn. Weiner is one of the most important artists working today and has been a huge influence on the entirety of The Mindfuls’ journey so far. The works on display are taken from ARTIST ROOMS, an inspirational collection of modern and contemporary art acquired for the nation by Tate and National Galleries of Scotland through the generosity of Anthony d'Offay with additional support from funders, including the Art Fund. The ARTIST ROOMS tour programme, now in its seventh year, is showing at 17 museums and galleries across the UK in 2015. The tour is supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England and through the continued support of the Art Fund.
