Winter at Woodhorn

November 16th 2015
Staff at Woodhorn Museum in Ashington are getting ready to transform the historical site for a winter with a difference from Saturday 28 November – Wednesday 23 December.
Following the phenomenal success of the 14-18 Now Poppies tour, which saw over 125,000 people visit the site over 7 weeks, the team are set to present another spectacular series of events for families.
For the very first time the Northumberland museum will be offering visitors the opportunity to get their skates on and take a trip around an outdoor rink be situated in the heart of the historic site, in the Pit Yard.
The WonderIce rink has a scientifically engineered surface and structure that lets skaters glide just as smoothly as on real ice. It will be open every weekend from 28 November up to Christmas plus Monday 21 – Wednesday 23 December.
Alongside the new skating experience, Woodhorn’s original pit stables will be transformed into a magical stable grotto to welcome Father Christmas who will be welcoming younger visitors for an unforgettable festive treat.
On Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 December, the site becomes even more magical with Woodhorn’s Weekend of Wonder.
Keith Merrin, Director at Woodhorn explains, ‘The team at Woodhorn are always looking for ways to present our incredible site in new ways, to welcome visitors to explore the rich heritage we have here. Following such a busy autumn for us with poppies, we knew we had to create another amazing opportunity for winter.
Keith added, ‘Continuing our series of firsts, this is the first time we have welcomed a skating rink to the site and we’re thrilled to be working with renowned outdoor art performance company, Walk the Plank, who are working with local communities to present the first Fire Garden at Woodhorn.’
The Weekend of Wonder also features a traditional Christmas Craft fayre with quality gifts and food and a pop-up photo moon-booth in the museum.
It is free to visit the museum and grounds and all day parking is £3.50. Charges apply for the WonderIce rink and Father Christmas. After school skating sessions will also be available on Thursdays and Fridays 3.30pm – 5pm between 3 and 18 December.
