Summer 2018 Pitmen Painters: Resurfacing

April 26th 2018

Pitmen Painters: Resurfacing

Discover, explore and celebrate the story and work of the Pitmen Painters, the Ashington Group of artists whose story is rooted in Northumberland’s industrial, cultural and artistic heritage.

This summer, the much-loved permanent Ashington Group Gallery at Woodhorn Museum is complemented by a special programme of exhibitions, events and things to do, running between 26th May and 16th September. In Pitmen Painters: Unseen visitors will have the opportunity to view previously unseen works by Ashington Group members on loan to the museum from private homes and collections.

Narbi Price, winner of the Contemporary British Painting Prize 2017, will present his new body of work, The Ashington Paintings. This new work is informed by the materials and methods of the Ashington Group and features locations in Ashington today.

Take part in our daily talks and tours which include spotlight tours of the Ashington Group Gallery and our Dig Deeper! colliery tour. On heritage open weekend, 15th & 16th September, there will also be behind the scenes tours to view Oliver Kilbourn’s My Life as a Pitman.

As part of the Northumberland Miners’ Picnic 2018, on Saturday June 9th, Eliot Smith Dance will perform extracts from PITMAN, a contemporary dance production which responds to paintings from the Ashington Group Collection.

During the Northumberland school summer holidays, everyone has the chance to have a go at making art in our artist-led Pop-Up Ashington Group Hut.  This fun & family friendly experience is inspired by the hut where the Ashington Group met to explore art, work & life.

On the 18th & 19th August, you can meet the artist Narbi Price and enjoy his artist-led exhibition tour and talk as part of the Great Northumberland programme.

Full details of these will be available shortly.  Please check back again with Woodhorn Museum’s website or social media to find out about all of other events and activities taking place this summer including Invasion Day, Classic & Vintage Car Rally, Mini Rally & much more!
